Anhui Province was officially established in 1667 during the Qing Dynasty. Its name was formed by combining the first characters of Anqing Prefecture and Huizhou Prefecture, while its abbreviation “Wan” comes from Mount Wan and the ancient State of Wan that once existed in the region. As one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, Anhui has a long and rich history. The Renzidong archaeological site in Fanchang, Wuhu, discovered evidence of human activity dating back around 2.5 million years. Throughout history, the province has produced many influential figures, including philosophers Laozi and Zhuangzi, military strategist Cao Cao, physician Hua Tuo, and upright official Bao Zheng.
