Henan, historically known as Zhongyuan, Zhongzhou, and Yuzhou, is abbreviated as "Yu". The province takes its name from its location, as most of its territory lies south of the Yellow River. Situated in central eastern China, Henan spans the Haihe, Yellow, Huaihe, and Yangtze River basins. The Yellow River flows across its central region, and the province borders Anhui and Shandong to the east, Hebei and Shanxi to the north, Shaanxi to the west, and Hubei Hubei to the south. Covering approximately 167,000 square kilometers, Henan had a permanent population of about 97.85 million in 2024, making it China's third most populous province.
