Where are the best places to explore classical gardens and Jiangnan culture in China?

Of course, it’s Jiangsu! Located in eastern China, Jiangsu is one of the best places to experience the charm of Jiangnan, famous for its classical gardens, ancient water towns, historic cities, and rich cultural heritage. Each city offers its own unique take on Jiangnan culture.

Among them, several cities stand out for their distinctive Jiangnan charm. Suzhou is the heart of Jiangnan Garden culture, famous for its classical gardens, historic canals, and elegant water towns. Nanjing combines the grandeur of an ancient capital with rich imperial and Republican-era heritage. Yangzhou is renowned for its graceful gardens, Slender West Lake, Grand Canal heritage, and refined Huaiyang cuisine, while Wuxi is known for its beautiful Taihu Lake scenery, traditional waterways, and the magnificent Lingshan Grand Buddha.

Suzhou

Suzhou is one of Jiangsu’s major economic centers and a renowned tourist destination. Its classical gardens, ancient towns, and charming water-town scenery are among the city’s biggest attractions. Nine classical gardens, including the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden, are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, featuring distinctive architecture and an elegant sense of history. Ancient towns such as Zhouzhuang and Tongli showcase the timeless charm of Jiangnan water towns, while Pingjiang Road, Shantang Street, and Jinji Lake offer more places to explore.

Suzhou is also renowned worldwide for its intangible cultural heritage, including Kunqu Opera and Suzhou embroidery. The city’s cuisine is equally appealing, with local specialties such as Suzhou-style noodles, Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish, and shengjian buns. You can also enjoy a cup of Biluochun tea, one of China’s famous green teas, for a taste of Suzhou’s culinary and tea traditions.

Nanjing

Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, is a historic city where the heritage of the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties meets modern urban life. Explore the city’s Republican-era heritage at the Presidential Palace and Nanjing Museum, and admire the solemn architecture of Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Discover the legacy of the Ming Dynasty at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the ruins of the Ming Palace, the Nanjing City Wall, and Zhanyuan Garden. Confucius Temple and the Qinhuai River are especially charming at night, offering a chance to experience the traditional atmosphere of old Jinling. For a taste of Nanjing’s natural scenery, visit Xuanwu Lake, Qixia Mountain, and Jiming Temple, then sample local specialties such as duck blood vermicelli soup and salted duck, or head to Nanjing Da Pai Dang to experience the city’s authentic street food and local atmosphere.

Yangzhou ‌

Yangzhou is known as the “World Canal Capital” and is one of China’s first National Historical and Cultural Cities. Famous for its beautiful scenery and rich cultural heritage, the city has attracted travelers for centuries. Slender West Lake is one of Yangzhou’s signature attractions, with the Five-Pavilion Bridge, White Pagoda, and Twenty-Four Bridges creating some of its most iconic views, often celebrated in classical Chinese poetry. Explore the China Grand Canal Museum and stroll along Dongguan Street, or visit Geyuan Garden and Heyuan Garden to discover the legacy of Yangzhou’s wealthy salt merchants. Yangzhou is also a renowned food destination in Jiangsu, where you can enjoy Yangzhou morning tea, Yangzhou Fried Rice, Wensi Tofu Soup, and other classic Huaiyang dishes.

‌ Wuxi

Wuxi, known as the “Pearl of Taihu Lake,” lies in the Yangtze River Delta and is one of the important cradles of Jiangnan civilization. With a long history and rich cultural heritage, the city offers a blend of beautiful lake scenery, historic waterways, and traditional culture. Yuantouzhu is one of the best places to enjoy the beauty of Taihu Lake and is especially famous for its cherry blossoms in spring. Explore the “Jiangnan Water Alleys” along the Grand Canal to experience the city’s traditional canal scenery, or visit historic areas such as Chong’an Temple, Nanchang Street, and Xiaolou Lane to discover the charm of old Wuxi. The magnificent Lingshan Grand Buddha, one of China’s largest Buddha statues, is another highlight, offering impressive architecture and a glimpse into the region’s rich Buddhist heritage.

Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang is an ancient Jiangnan city on the banks of the Yangtze River, with more than 3,000 years of history and a rich cultural heritage. Its unique location and long history have shaped a distinctive blend of natural scenery and traditional culture. The city’s most famous attractions are the Three Mountains of Zhenjiang: Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigushan. Jinshan Temple, a historic Buddhist temple built against the mountain and beside the water, is one of the city’s most iconic sights. Across the river, Beigushan and Jinshan form a striking landscape, while Jiaoshan is known for Dinghui Temple, which houses a valuable collection of Buddhist artifacts, including a rare Song Dynasty bronze Tripitaka. Explore Xijin Ferry, a historic neighborhood with traditional architecture and a glimpse into old Zhenjiang.

Zhenjiang is also known for its distinctive local cuisine and traditional culinary skills. Try Zhenjiang Fragrant Vinegar, one of China’s Four Famous Vinegars, as well as local specialties such as crab roe soup dumplings and pot-cover noodles, a signature noodle dish served with a small pot lid placed over the bowl.
