For many travelers, Jiangsu is one of China’s most rewarding destinations, attracting visitors with its classical gardens, historic cities, scenic waterways, and rich cultural heritage. Many come to explore the elegant gardens of Suzhou, stroll along the Qinhuai River and visit Confucius Temple in Nanjing, or enjoy the beautiful scenery of Slender West Lake in Yangzhou.

However, Jiangsu is more than just a destination for gardens and ancient towns. The province also offers the historic Grand Canal, beautiful Taihu Lake, Buddhist landmarks such as Jinshan Temple and Lingshan Grand Buddha, and a wealth of traditional architecture and cultural heritage. Suzhou’s classical gardens, Nanjing’s Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Wuxi’s Lingshan Scenic Area, and other natural and cultural attractions reveal the diverse character of Jiangsu.

Top 1: Suzhou Gardens

The Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden, Lion Grove Garden, and Master of the Nets Garden are among the most representative classical gardens in Suzhou. Known for their exquisite layouts, elegant architecture, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, these gardens showcase the refined charm of Jiangnan. In the Humble Administrator’s Garden, pavilions and towers are reflected in the water, creating ever-changing views as you walk through the garden. Suzhou is often known as the “City of Gardens,” with more than 50 surviving classical gardens. The Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden, Master of the Nets Garden, and Huanxiu Villa are among those inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Top 2: Confucius Temple, Nanjing

Nanjing Confucius Temple is one of the four most famous Confucian temples in China and an important part of the Qinhuai River Scenic Area. Located next to the Jiangnan Examination Hall along the Qinhuai River, the temple was first built in 1034 during the Northern Song Dynasty and has a history of nearly 1,000 years. Today, the complex includes the Confucius Temple, the Academy, and the Examination Hall. The Confucius Temple Academy was one of the most complete official schools in ancient China and served as the highest educational institution for students in Jiangsu during the imperial examination era.

Nanjing served as the capital of China eleven times throughout history, and the Confucius Temple area was already a prosperous district during the Six Dynasties period. Today, its traditional architecture, bustling streets, and distinctive Jiangnan water-town atmosphere make it a popular place to experience Nanjing’s history and culture.

Top 3: Zhouzhuang Ancient Town

Zhouzhuang, located between Shanghai and Suzhou, is hailed as” China’s No.1 Water Town.” With a history spanning over 900 years, it is often referred to as a “living fossil” of Jiangnan water towns. Surrounded by water on all sides, the town is built along canals, with waterways crisscrossing in a grid-like layout. It retains nearly a hundred well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings and 14 ancient bridges, perfectly showcasing the charm of a traditional water town—especially enchanting at night.

Among its many historical sites, Fuan Bridge, Twin Bridges, and Shen House are particularly popular with visitors. The Twin Bridges, formed by the intersection of two bridges in a cross shape, resemble an old-fashioned key and are thus nicknamed the “Key Bridge.” Fuan Bridge is notable for housing five rare slabs of Wukang stone. Shen House, the largest and most luxurious residential complex in Zhouzhuang, features exquisite interior décor and intricate wood carvings, offering a vivid glimpse into the lifestyle and cultural sophistication of wealthy Jiangnan merchants during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

With scenery reminiscent of West Lake but a much narrower waterway, it became known as “Slender West Lake.”

The 200-year-old Five-Pavilion Bridge is one of its highlights, featuring 15 arches whose reflections resemble full moons on the water. The white Lotus Flower Pagoda, tranquil lake scenery, classical gardens, and rich historical heritage together showcase the distinctive charm of the Jiangnan water-town landscape.

For centuries, it played a vital role in transporting grain, troops, and military supplies, helping maintain imperial rule and national unity. With a history spanning more than 2,500 years, the canal has also shaped the history and culture of the cities and communities along its route.

As the boat slowly cruises along the canal, you can admire the traditional houses lining both banks and catch glimpses of everyday life along the water.
