Tibet is a vast and beautiful land, perched on the majestic Tibetan Plateau and situated on the northern side of the Himalayas. Known for its extremely high altitude, it is revered as the Roof of the World, and has long been a sacred destination in the hearts of pilgrims. If you have fourteen days to explore Tibet, how can you make the most of your time and fully experience its allure? This guide will provide you with a detailed itinerary for an unforgettable two-week trip, ensuring that you can explore Tibet to the fullest without missing out on its wonders.

2 Weeks Tibet Itinerary for Family with Kids

14 Days Tibet ItineraryPotala Palace, Lhasa

Day 1: Acclimatize to the plateau environment in your hotel. You can walk around Potala Palace Square, admire the palace's grand silhouette from afar. You may also interact with the pigeons, feed them corn kernels, and soak in the everyday atmosphere of Tibetan life.

Day 2: In the morning, visit the Tibet Museum to learn about Tibetan history and culture. After lunch, explore the Potala Palace, where you can learn about Tibetan Buddhism and feel the mysterious and solemn atmosphere.

Day 3: Stroll along Barkhor Street, dress in traditional Tibetan attire and transform into a Drolma or Tashi, circumambulating the prayer route clockwise with pilgrims toward Jokhang Temple. In the evening, watch the performance of The Princess Wencheng.

Day 4: Drive to Yamdrok Lake, stopping en route at the viewing platform of the Gambala Pass to observe the turquoise lake. Upon arrival at Yamdrok, you can interact with lambs and stack Mani stones for blessings. Then detour to the Karola Glacier to admire the majestic ice tongue from afar beneath the glacial snout. In the evening, arrive in Gyantse County.

Day 5: Travel from Gyantse to the Pala Manor, then continue to Shigatse. In Shigatse, visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of Tibet's most important and famous monasteries, and the traditional seat of the successive Panchen Lamas. Stay overnight in Tingri County.

Day 6: Cross the Gyatso La Pass and enter the Everest scenic area to feel the grandeur of nature. At night, set up camp at Everest Base Camp. You can also visit the nearby Rongbuk Monastery to experience a sense of tranquility and mystery.

Day 7: Cross over Mount Gawula and Mount Makalu, and gaze from afar at Lhotse, finally arriving at the foot of Mount Everest. Continue to Cho Oyu to feel the magnificence of the mountain ranges. In the evening, arrive in Shigatse for a rest.

Day 8: Depart from Shigatse and drive back to Lhasa, on the way you will see the sight of the Yarlung Tsangpo River Valley. In Lhasa, take a walk along the banks of the Lhasa River, gaze at the sunset over the golden rooftops of the Potala Palace.

Day 9: Go to Namtso Lake, passing by the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains along the way. Upon reaching Tashi Peninsula by the lake, enjoy the stunning scenery of Namtso. In the evening, watch the beautiful sunset by the lakeshore. Overnight in Damxung.

Day 10: Get up early and head to Tashi Peninsula to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over Lake Namtso. Then continue on to the Nyenchen Tanglha wild hot springs, where you can soak your feet while taking in the distant scenery. Afterwards, return to Lhasa.

Day 11: Head to Nyingchi, with a lower altitude, and on the way you can visit Lake Basum Tso. Then you will arrive in Lulang Forest and take a rest.

Day 12: Ride horses through the original forests shrouded in mist and rolling clouds. Then head to a pasture town at the foot of Mount Sejila, where you can experience life as a herder, feed yaks and enjoy archery. In the evening, head to Suosong Village.

Day 13: Visit the largest canyon in the world, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Enjoy a gentle hike along the Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon, and from the viewing platform, gaze upon Mount Namjagbarwa in the distance. Return to the downtown of Nyingchi in the evening.

Day 14: If it is in spring, you can watch the beautiful peach blossoms and leave directly from Nyingchi, instead, you may return to Lhasa and spend you last free time in Tibet.

Day 1: On the first day in Lhasa, Tibet, check in to your hotel and rest to acclimate to the plateau climate. Avoid any strenuous exercise or outdoor activities on this day. Staying calm and getting ample rest are the best ways to prevent altitude sickness.

Day 2: Head to Nyingchi, with a lower altitude, and on the way you can visit Lake Basum Tso. Next is the Lulang Forest, where you can enjoy the sea of clouds and the sea of forests to your heart's content, and also catch a distant view of Namjagbarwa Peak.

Day 3: Visit Lulang Forest to explore and observe the plateau's diverse vegetation. Then, try the local specialty in Lulang Town—stone pot chicken. If in spring, you can also choose instead to admire peach blossoms at Gala Village.

Day 4: Head to Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon to see the world's largest and deepest canyon, and to its south stands Namcha Barwa, slowly make your way there to admire the snow-capped peaks that remain covered year-round. In the evening, stay at Mêdog County.

Day 5: Travel to Rakwa Tso, where emerald waters mirror the blue sky, white clouds, and snow-capped mountains. To the south of the lake lies the famous Laigu Glacier, one of the world's three great glaciers, where you can experience the world of blue ice up close.

Day 6: Prepare for the return journey. You will pass the Yarlung Tsangpo U Turn, where you can climb up to the viewing platform for a panoramic look, and from above the shape resembles a lollipop. In the evening, arrive in Suosong Village.

Day 7: Return to Lhasa, and on the way back, you will pass and take a visit of the Kading Valley, where you can see steep peaks rise dramatically, ancient trees tower to the sky, and plateau waterfalls surge in grandeur.

Day 8: Travel to one of Tibet's three sacred lakes, Yamdrok Lake, and when you admire it from above it resembles a sapphire embedded among towering peaks. If time allows, you can also continue on to visit the Karola Glacier. Stay overnight at Shigatse.

Day 9: Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the sacred resting place of the Panchen Lama. Then In the afternoon, return to Lhasa and take a rest.

Day 10: Go to Namtso Lake, passing by the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains along the way. Upon reaching Tashi Peninsula by the lake, enjoy the stunning scenery of Namtso. In the evening, watch the beautiful sunset by the lakeshore. Overnight in Damxung.

Day 11: Get up early and head to Tashi Peninsula to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over Lake Namtso. Then continue on to the Nyenchen Tanglha wild hot springs, where you can soak your feet while taking in the distant scenery. Afterwards, return to Lhasa.

Day 12: Visit Potala Palace in the morning, and then wander around Barkhor Street, feel the religious atmosphere of the holy land. Then you may arrive in Jokhang Temple.

Day 13: In the morning visit Drepung Monastery, and if it is Sho Dun Festival, you can see the magnificent Buddha Sun-drying ceremony. In the afternoon head to Sera Monastery and watch the monks debating on Buddhist texts.

Day 14: The last day in Lhasa, you can enjoy your free time on the holy land.

Day 1: Depart from Chengdu, Sichuan, and travel through the First Pass of Kham. Along the way, wildflowers bloom in abundance, while tents are casually scattered across lush green grasslands. In the evening, drive on to Xinduqiao for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Travel via Litang to Daocheng, visiting Haizi Mountain and the Wuliang River along the way. In the evening, arrive in Shangri-La Town in Daocheng for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Travel to Zhaguanbeng, then hike to Chonggu Monastery. Continue by vehicle to visit Luorong Pasture, where you can also ride on horseback from the pasture to Milk Lake and Colorful Lake. In the evening, return to Shangri-La Town.

Day 4: Continue via Litang to Batang County, visiting the vast Maoya Grassland along the way, with the picturesque Zimei Lake, a superb spot for photography. In the evening, stay overnight in Batang, the last low-altitude settlement before crossing into Tibet.

Day 5: Cross the Seventy-Two Bends of the Nujiang River and arrive in Basu. Seventy-Two Bends are an essential section of the southern Sichuan–Tibet route. With narrow roads and steep gradients, it is a formidable challenge for both cyclists and drivers alike.

Day 6: Travel to Bome County, with stops to explore Ranwu Lake and Midui Glacier. Also you can visit one of the world's three major glaciers, Laigu Glacier.

Day 7: Travel to Nyingchi City, passing through Tongmai, the last natural barrier on the Sichuan–Tibet Highway. Journey through the sea of dense forests in Lulang, then cross the snow-covered Sejila Mountain, and stay overnight in Nyingchi.

Day 8: Head to visit Basum Tso, the Pearl of Eastern Tibet, then cross Mila Mountain and continue toward Lhasa. From afar, catch sight of the majestic Potala Palace atop the Marpo Ri Hill, the long-awaited holy city of Lhasa finally comes into view.

Day 9: Depart from Lhasa, cross Lhasa River, and traverse over Mount Gambala, where you will encounter the pristine waters of Yamdrok Lake. Next, explore the magnificent Karola Glacier, then continue to the tranquil Manla Reservoir, and finally arrive at Gyantse.

Day 10: Drive to Shigatse and visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the sacred resting place of the Panchen Lama. Then continue to Shegar in Tingri, where you can enjoy a distant view of the majestic Mount Everest. Rest well to prepare for tomorrow's Everest cycling journey.

Day 11: Cycle over Gawula Pass, taking your time to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Himalayas. Then descend into the Rongbuk Valley and arrive at Basong for the night.

Day 12: Continue cycling along the Rongbuk Valley, passing the Rongbuk Monastery and reaching Everest Base Camp, completing the challenge of riding a bicycle to Mount Everest. Do not forget to take a heroic photo with your heroic bearing in front of Mount Everest.

Day 13: Rise early to greet the dawn at Mount Everest. Ride through the Himalayas with the first rays of morning light, crossing Gawula Pass and gazing at the majestic, solemn peaks. Return to Shigatse by evening.

Day 14: Travel along the Yarlung Tsangpo River toward Namtso. Stroll slowly along the lakeshore and gaze to the southeast, and then return to Lhasa.

2 Weeks Tibet cultural Immersion Itinerary

Day 1: Check in your hotel first and take a rest. Then take a leisurely walk along Barkhor Street, flowing with local pilgrims and tourists alike toward Jokhang Temple. Sit down at the square in front of the temple to feel the devotion of the Tibetan people.

Day 2: In the morning, visit the majestic Potala Palace. At lunch time, head to the Nyainre Folk Custom Park for sightseeing and to sample authentic Tibetan cuisine. Before 3:00 p.m., make your way to Sera Monastery to watch the traditional Tibetan-style Buddhist scripture debate (Monk Debating), and continue touring the monastery afterward.

Day 3: Drive to Namtso, with a distant view from the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains. Then continue along the lakeshore, listening to the prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Finally arrive at the Sacred Elephant Heaven Gate and feel the serenity as if you were in paradise.

Day 4: Drive to Tsetang, the cradle of Tibetan civilization and history. Visit Yumbulagang, Tibet's first palace, older in history than the Potala Palace. Nearby lies Tradruk Temple, where, according to legend, Princess Wencheng once practiced meditation.

Day 5: In the morning, visit Samye Monastery. You can also hike up the nearby mountain for a panoramic view of the entire complex. After lunch, head to Chimpu Hermitage, a sacred retreat site where many high monks and tulkus once practiced, and which still draws streams of devoted pilgrims today. Afterward, return to Lhasa.

Day 6: Travel to another sacred lake in Tibet, Yamdrok, then continue to Gyantse. Along the way, you can admire the Karola Glacier by the roadside. After arrival, visit Baiju Monastery. Stay overnight in Shigatse.

Day 7: Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, a traditional seat of the successive Panchen Lamas, and then head to Tingri County, where you can look far to the Mount Everest.

Day 8: Travel to Saga County, and along the way, you will pass the Lake Lang Co, where the water shows two hues, deep blue up close and emerald green in the distance, surrounded by grass meadows along the shore.

Day 9: Visit the sacred Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal, the Sacred Lake and the Ghost Lake. Stay overnight in Tarchen, Purang County.

Day 10: After breakfast, take the sightseeing bus to Darchen, where you begin the first day of the 13-kilometer pilgrimage trek around Mount Kailash, arriving at Zhire Temple at the foot of the west slope. If the weather is clear, you can also witness the most breathtaking sunsets over Kailash.

Day 11: Admire the magnificent sunrise over the northwest face of Mount Kailash as you make your way to Drolma La Pass, where the sacred Lake of Compassion comes into view. After passing the Lake of Compassion, begin a long descent that leads you all the way down to the river valley at the southeastern foot of Kailash, arriving at Zutulphuk Monastery.

Day 12: Return to the starting point, Tarchen. Walk along the streams at the foot of Mount Kailash; upon reaching the highest point, enjoy distant views of the majestic Gurla Mandhata and the sacred Lake Manasarovar. After returning, you may drive to Lake Manasarovar for sightseeing.

Day 13: Witness the magnificent views of Mount Kailash, then continue to Zanda County to explore the unique earthen forest of Zanda Earth Forest. Afterwards, visit the ruins of the ancient Guge Kingdom, where exquisite murals crafted a thousand years ago, remain vivid in color and lifelike in detail. Finally, return to Tarchen in the evening.

Day 14: Return to Lhasa and prepare for your return journey.
