Jiuzhaigou National Park is located in Zhangzha Town, Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is 450 kilometers south of Chengdu and a valley with a depth of more than 50 kilometers. Jiuzhaigou National Park is famous for its fantastic landscape and unique Tibetan and Qiang folk customs. The total area of the scenic area is 64,297 hectares, and the forest coverage rate exceeds 80%. Nine Tibetan villages, including Shuzheng Village, Heye Village, and Zechawa Village, are located in this alpine lake group, hence the name ‘Jiuzhai Valley’.

Natural Landscape: Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area is a world natural heritage, a national 5A-level tourist attraction, a national geological park, and a network of world biosphere reserves. It is the first national nature reserve in China with the main purpose of protecting natural scenery.

Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area is a masterpiece of nature. There are 108 colorful mountain lakes in the scenic area, which are called "Haizi" by the locals. These lakes are blue all year round and crystal clear and the lake water will show different hues with the change of light and the passage of seasons. The lakes are surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, lush green trees, clear and beautiful lake water, colorful waterfalls, and surging rapids. It is regarded as ‘sacred mountain and holy water’ by local Tibetan compatriots, and foreign tourists regard it as a fairy tale world. Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area is distributed in a ‘Y’ shape and consists of three major ditches: Shuzheng Valley, Zechawa Valley and Rize Valley.

Shuzheng Valley

It is the first scenic spot seen in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The valley is about 14 kilometers long and has 40 lakes, accounting for 40% of all lakes in Jiuzhaigou scenic area. These lakes are dotted with beautiful valleys, rippling blue waves, birds singing, and reeds shaking. The main attractions of Shuzheng Valley are: Bonsai Beach, Reed Lake, Shuanglong Lake (Double Dragon Lake), Spark Lake, Shuzheng Waterfall, Rhino Lake and Nuorilang Waterfall, etc.

Bosai Beach: It is the first landscape seen when entering Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. In front of Heye Village, there is a low and flat shoal. The slope of the calcified beach is gentle, with various trees and bushes standing in the water, forming huge natural bonsai in various poses.

Reed Lake: With an altitude of 2140 meters and a total length of 2.2 kilometers, it is a semi-swamp lake. The lake is overgrown with reeds. In spring and summer, the water in the Reed Lake is green, like lush reeds, full of life. In autumn and winter, golden reeds can be seen everywhere. During the flowering period, the velvet-like anthela sway gently in the breeze, attracting egrets and wild ducks to play in groups on the lake, presenting a picturesque scene.

Shuanglong Lake: Shuanglong Lake is above the sea of reeds. Through the crystal clear lake water, you can see that there are two strip-shaped biological travertine reefs hidden in the sea, like two dragons hidden in the sea, ready to take off at any time into the sky. Many beautiful swans, mandarin ducks and wild ducks often inhabit here. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the sight of wild ducks swimming and swans flying, which will definitely add more fun to your travel.

Spark Lake: It is located between Shuanglong Lake and Wolong Lake, covering an area of 36,352 square meters and an average depth of 9 meters. Surrounded by dense forests, the lake water is hidden in the green, so the lake blue water is like a crystal clear emerald.

Shuzheng Waterfall: It is the first waterfall seen in Jiuzhaigou and the smallest among the four waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou. Although it is the smallest, it can also allow those who visit Jiuzhaigou for the first time to see the masterpiece of nature. Shuzheng Waterfall is 25 meters in height and 72 meters in width at the top of the waterfall. The upstream lake is divided into thousands of water bundles by the trees in the water and gathers to the edge of the cliff at the top of Shuzheng Waterfall, forming an elegant water curtain.

Rhino Lake: It is the largest natural lake (Haizi) in Shuzheng Valley, with an altitude of 2400 meters and a water depth of 17 meters. The deepest place can reach more than 40 meters. The Rhino Lake has open waters, with intoxicating blue lake water. It is the lake with the most changing scenery in Jiuzhai Velly. Every morning, the mist is reflected, both phantasmagoric and real, connecting with the heavens, the earth, and the woods, making it difficult to tell from the sky the lake. The leaves around the lake shore are also rich in color, bright and beautiful.

Nuorilang Waterfall: Nuorilang Waterfall is the intersection of Shuzheng Valley, Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley. Located in the heart of the scenic spot, it is often used as the sign and symbol of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The waterfall with a width of 300 meters and a drop of 20 meters shows a multi-level downward trend, which is one of the favorite spots for tourists. The former Nuorilang Waterfall is the widest travertine waterfall in China so far. In the earthquake in 2017, Nuorilang Waterfall was severely damaged, and the former magnificent waterfall no longer exists.

The water volume of the waterfall is the largest in summer when you can see the most spectacular waterfall scene. In the middle of winter, there will be a mysterious ice waterfall.

Zechawa Valley

After passing through Nuorilang Waterfall, the sightseeing channel of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area is divided into two parts. To the south is the Zechawa Valley, which is 18 kilometers in length and is currently the longest valley in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. Along the valley, you will pass through the Seasonal Lake, Wucai Pond and finally reach Long Lake at an altitude of 3060 meters.

Tips: It is a long journey to visit Zechawa Valley and there are not many scenic spots, so it is not recommended to visit it during the whole journey on foot. You can choose to take a bus from Nuorilang Central Station to Long Lake, walk to Wucai Pond, and then go down to upper Seasonal Lake. Finally, return by bus and watch the mid-Season Lake and the lower Season Lake on the way.

Seasonal Lake: Seasonal Lake are divided into upper, middle and lower seasonal lake. The amount of water in the Seasonal Lake varies with the seasons. In autumn, the rainfall is abundant and the lake water is full. In winter and spring, the water level gradually decreases until early summer, when the lake water even completely dries up, and the lake bed is covered with grass, which becomes a blessed place for grazing.

Wucai Pond: With an altitude of 2995 meters and a depth of 6.6 meters, it is the smallest and most colorful Haizi (lake) in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The Wucai Pond is exceptionally clear. Through the pool water, you can see the stone patterns on the rock surface at the bottom of the pool. Due to the color difference of the sediments at the bottom of the pool and the different colors of the plants by the pool, the original blue lake surface has become colorful. On a sunny day, the lake is rippling with shining red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple, as if in dreamland. Wucai Pond is the most delicate lake among the lakes in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, and is known as ‘the eye of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area’.

Long Lake: Located at the end of Zechawa Valley, it is 3060 meters above sea level, 5 kilometers in length, 600 meters in width, and covers an area of 930,000 square meters. It is the Haizi with the highest altitude, the widest lake surface and the deepest water in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The water source of Long Lake comes from the melting snow of the surrounding mountains. The lake is surrounded by cedars, peaks and glaciers covered with snow all year round. Standing on the viewing platform of Long Lake, you can see the dark blue lake, blue sky and white clouds, and snow-capped peaks. It feels that the sky is connected with the mountains and the lake, which is a great landscape of the Long Lake. In early autumn, Long Lake put on ‘white armor’. In the middle of winter, the ice of Long Lake is 60 centimeters in thickness.

Rize Valley

With a total length of 16 kilometers, it is the essence of scenic route of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area between the Nuorilang Waterfall and the virgin forest. The scenery here is beautiful, changeable, and the scenic spots are very dense. Famous landscapes include: Mirror Lake, Pearl Beach, Peacock River, Five Flower Lake, Panda Lake, Panda Lake Waterfall, Arrow Bamboo Lake, Swan Lake, Fangcao Lake, and virgin forest.

Mirror Lake: It is located at the junction of Shuzheng Valley and Rize Valley, with an altitude of 2390M, a water depth of 11 meters, a widest point of 24.3 meters, and an area of 190,000 square meters. Mirror Lake is famous for the mirror-like water surface and its clear and bright reflection. Whenever the morning sun is first exposed or the morning glow is dyed everywhere, the sea water is as flat as a mirror, and the blue sky, white clouds, colorful forests and snow-capped mountains are reflected on the sea surface, showing the spectacle of ‘fish swimming in the clouds and birds flying in the water’. In addition, there is a towering tree by the Mirror Lake, which is tightly entwined by a long vine, like a pair of sweet lovers. Therefore, people gave Mirror Lake the nickname ‘Love Park’.

Pearl Beach: With an altitude of 2433m and a width of about 160m, it is a huge fan-shaped travertine beach stream, a relatively wide stone beach among the many Haizi in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. The clear lake water flows down through the spacious beach, and the lake water splashes silver beads on the sloping and uneven stone beach, which are shaped like pearls, hence the name. Pearl Beach is the place where Monk Tang and his apprentice wades horse at the opening of the TV series "Journey to the West".

Peacock River: The Peacock River is 310 meters in length and winds along a deep valley, with lush flowers and trees on both sides, and the river water presents a variety of colors: dark green, gold and sapphire. Every autumn, the trees on both sides are dyed with white frost, and the late autumn leaves cover the entire river. When looking down, a mottled torrent involves a colorful world, like the gorgeous tail feathers of a peacock when it opens its screen.

Five Flower Lake: It is 2472 meters above sea level, 5 meters in depth, and covers an area of 90,000 square meters. Due to the travertine deposition on the seabed, the algae of various colors and the reflections of the colorful trees on the shore, this place presents beautiful scenery of gorgeous colors. It is the essence of Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area Scenic Area, and also the most famous and the most beautiful Haizi, known as ‘a wonder in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area’.

Five Flower Lake is the most beautiful in October, when the lake water is crystal clear, and the leaves of different colors on the shore are intertwined with the reflections in the water, like a fairyland. The plank road on the west side of Five Flower Lake is one of the best viewing points. The end of the plank road is the outlet of Five Flower Lake, which is the area with the most colorful leaves.

Panda Lake: It is 2587 meters above sea level, 14 meters in depth, and covers an area of 90,000 square meters. The texture of the rock wall by the lake is peculiar, which is contrast finely with the white stones with black patterns under the water when reflected in the lake. Especially on a sunny and sunny day, the blue sky and white clouds on the lake, layers of forests on the shore, and the peaks standing by the lake are very beautiful when reflecting in the water. It is said that giant pandas in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area once came here to wander, drink water, and forage, so it is called Panda Lake.

Panda Lake Waterfall: The Panda Lake Waterfall is 80 meters in height and has the largest drop among the waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. Walking from the trestle bridge on the north side of the Panda Lake to the end, and walk down a steep staircase slowly, tourists can see a stream flying out from the mouth of the Panda Lake under the trestle, and fell straight into the deep valley. This flying stream was cut into several sections by the protruding rock walls and boulders under the cliff, which is the Panda Lake Waterfall.

Arrow Bamboo Lake: It is 2,618 meters above sea level, 6 meters in depth, and covers an area of 170,000 square meters. There are arrow bamboos growing around the lake shore, hence the name Arrow Bamboo Lake. The lake surface of Arrow Bamboo Lake is open and long, and the water is blue in color. The reflections are so vivid that people can't tell whether the mountains are in the water or the water is flooding the mountains. Zhang Yimou's (a famous director in China) movie "Hero" was filmed here.

Swan Lake: an altitude of 2905 meters, it is a semi-swamp lake. On the vast lake, weeds are lush, the mountain flowers are splendid, and a clear stream winds in between. Here the water and grass in this area are plump, swans rise and fall from time to time, and wild ducks swim in groups.

Fangcao Lake: At an altitude of 2910 meters, it is a semi-swamp lake. Various kinds of exotic flowers and plants grow here, especially Commelina diffusa and Monochoria vaginalis. In the blooming season, there will be flowers of various colors blooming, fragrant and swaying. In the water, there is green and flourishing grass and waterfowls swimming.

Virgin Forest: It is the end of Rize Valley, with an altitude of 3,060 meters and an area of more than 2,000 hectares. Here the trees shade the sky and the air is fresh, which is a natural oxygen bar. It makes people feel extremely comfortable when walking through it, stepping on the deep and soft moss and fallen leaves, smelling the fragrant and humid air, listening to the pine waves and birdsong, and feeling the blowing of the wild forest and mountain wind. The trees here are mainly fir, spruce, and precious red birch. The shrubs under the trees are mainly honeysuckle, rhododendron, arrow bamboo, etc. The moss on the ground is tens of centimeters in thickness.

Animal & Plant resources

In addition to the fantastic scenery, Jiuzhaigou National Park has numerous flora and fauna. The natural forest covers an area of nearly 30,000 hectares, with 74 kinds of nationally protected rare plants and 18 kinds of nationally protected animals. The diversity of plants provides a good ecological environment for wild animals. The first-class national protected animals in the scenic spot include giant panda, takin and golden monkey, etc., and the second-class includes red panda, macaque, blue eared pheasant, golden pheasant and goral. Suggested tour routes and time in the scenic area

Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area consists of Shuzheng Valley, Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley. Among them, there are denser scenic spots at Shuzheng Valley and Rize Valley, where visitors can spend longer time. There are only 3 landscapes in Zechawa Valley, which can be visited in a short time.

There are more than 70 kilometers of ecological wooden plank roads in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area. You can choose to walk along the plank road to enjoy the scenery without taking a sightseeing bus, because there is much beautiful scenery that cannot be seen on the sightseeing bus. For most of the visitors, it is recommended to take a sightseeing bus from one valley to another, because not everyone is willing to spend 2 days walking in the 3 valleys to enjoy the scenery leisurely.

  • If you want to efficiently visit all the scenic spots in one day, it is recommended to take a sightseeing bus from the entrance to the end of Rize Valley or Zechawa Valley, that is, Long Lake or virgin forest, and then travel all the way down to Nuorilang Tourist Service Center. After that, taking the sightseeing bus to the other end, travel all the way down and finally tour along Shuzheng Valley to entrance.
  • If you look for better viewing and shooting effects, you can go to Mirror Lake in the morning to see the reflection. You can visit Shuzheng Valley in the morning for the best photo effects, and visit Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley in the afternoon.
  • If you want to visit each scenic spot at great length, it is better to spend 2 days there, the first day for 2 valleys and the second day for the remaining one.

Second Visit to the scenic area

During the peak season, it is not allowed to enter the scenic area twice with the same ticket. During the slack season (16th November to 31st March), second visit with the same ticket is allowed. You need to pay a handling fee of RMB20 when entering the scenic area for the second time. An additional RMB80 for sightseeing bus is needed for the next day.

The process of entering the valley for two consecutive days is: when you purchase the ticket on the first day, you will be asked if you want to enter the valley for a second time. You say yes, agree and then pay. You will be photographed upon entering the park, which will be used to validate your ticket for the next day. The ticket price is RMB80 plus the RMB80 for the sightseeing bus and RMB20 service fee plus RMB80 for the sightseeing bus. It is equivalent to RMB160 for the entrance on the first day and RMB100 for the second visit. If you buy a one-day ticket and decide to come back the next day, you must tell the park staff when you leave the park.

Some scenic spots are closed during slack season

In order to protect the ecological environment, some scenic spots and plank roads in Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area will be closed every year during slack season (16th November to 31st March) for maintenance and closed conservation.
