When is the best time or season to visit Dali?

The answer is the best time/season for traveling is Spring(Mar. to May) and Autumn(Sep. to Nov.).

A song goes like this, "March is the very time when Dali showcases its exceptional beauty." Wherever you go, being Dali ancient town, Mt. Changshan or Erhai Lake, spring is the best season for you. Moreover, the Bai people celebrate most of their traditional festivals (e.g. the famous March Street Festival) and hold most of their important gatherings around March. If you go there in spring, you can truly experience the strong ethnic lifestyle there.

Located in the plateau monsoon climate zone of low latitude, Dali has a small year temperature difference with unobvious seasonal changes. It’s mild all the year round in Dali without being too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Since its annual average temperature is around 12.2-18.9℃, the seasonal changes in Dali are unobvious. It welcomes most of its rainfalls from May to October. The temperature decreases from the south to the north.

The temperature falls dramatically after it rains in the transitional season between summer and autumn. A saying goes like this amongst the local people, "autumn befalls after the rain." Thus, you’d better bring some long-sleeved T-shirts to stay warm if you go to Dali. The temperature in Dali is a little bit lower than that in Kunming. The wind in Xiaguan is nothing but horrible. There is no shelter for you when it starts to blow. Once you leave Xiaguan, you can free from the horrendous wind.
