Purple Pottery Making
- Type: Cultural Immersion/ Art &
- Tour Length : 2-3 hours
- Location: Lin'an Town, Jianshui County, Yunnan
Jianshui purple pottery originates from Jianshui County in Honghe, Yunnan, with a history dating back to the Tang and Song dynasties. By the Ming and Qing periods, it was ranked alongside Jingdezhen porcelain, Yixing zisha, and Tongchuan ceramics of Shaanxi as one of China’s “Four Famous Pottery Traditions.”
What makes Jianshui purple pottery unique is that it is neither glazed nor painted—the luster comes entirely from the clay itself and meticulous hand polishing. The clay is sourced locally in Jianshui, processed through aging and washing to remove impurities, leaving only a fine, smooth material. The pieces are then fired at temperatures as high as 1,300°C, with absolutely no chemical additives.
While it bears some resemblance to Yixing zisha, the structure is different. Zisha is porous with multiple tiny air holes, whereas Jianshui purple pottery has a distinctive single-pore structure—impermeable to water yet breathable from the outside. This means that when brewing tea, no liquid seeps through, but the leaves inside unfurl more fully, releasing a richer aroma. Its excellent heat retention makes Jianshui teapots especially suited for brewing fragrant teas such as raw Pu’er or Wuyi rock tea.
In Jianshui, you can visit Wanyao Village, the birthplace of Jianshui purple pottery. The village is home to the Purple Pottery Creative Park and Baigong Workshop, where traditional techniques such as clay kneading, wheel throwing, and carving are kept alive. Visitors can try their hand at these crafts under the guidance of skilled artisans and even take part in the firing process. The best part is that you can bring home your very own handmade purple pottery creation as a unique souvenir.

Traditional Tofu Making in Jianshui
- Type: Cultural Immersion/ Art & Food
- Tour Length : 1.5-2 hours
- Location: Jianshui County, Yunnan
One of the must-try local specialties in Jianshui is its famous tofu, and the best place to experience its traditional making process is at Banjing Tofu Workshop (Zeng’s Banjing Tofu), located on Xizheng Street in the ancient town, right beside the 600-year-old Ximen Great Well.
Here, you can witness every step of this six-generation-old craft — from soaking soybeans, grinding and filtering the pulp, to curdling and hand-pressing the tofu. Using water from the historic Daban Well, the workshop still relies on traditional tools and methods, producing over 2,000 pieces of tofu each day. Visitors can observe the process up close, see how the tofu is wrapped and shaped, and enjoy tasting fresh soybean milk, douhua (tofu pudding), and fried tofu. You can also purchase specialties like dried tofu skin and bean paste to take home, or enjoy a simple buffet-style tofu meal.

At Xianghuiqiao Station, visitors can stroll across the centuries-old bridge and take in its rustic charm. The journey ends at Tuanshan Station, where the beautifully preserved Tuanshan Village awaits, offering a glimpse of late Qing dynasty courtyard houses and exquisite wood carvings.
