Best time & seasons to travel to China

China travel seasons

When is the best time to visit China

It is important to choose to the right season for your trip. Here, we offer the following suggestions for your reference:

1. Spring and autumn are the two best seasons for visiting China as it is cold in winter and hot in summer. Unless you have a busy schedule during spring and autumn you may just as well visit China during these periods. If you think you can stand the cold, then you will find that the scenic spots are not so packed in winter and travel is less expensive. A visit to China in winter also means that you can experience the Spring Festival or the Lantern Festival. The festive atmosphere will definitely contribute to a unique Chinese cultural experience!

2. When planning your trip to China, you need to do your best to avoid the two major Chinese holidays, namely the May Day Holiday from April 29 to May 3 and the National Holiday from September 29 to October 7. During these two holidays, scenic areas are packed, traffic jams are common, and transport is heavily booked. Furthermore, travel expenses are much higher than usual, and service at hotels and restaurants is also compromised.

3. The Shoton Festival observed in Tibet usually falls around August 18 (not definitely) and lasts a week. During this period the places celebrating the festival are all packed and hotels and restaurants are far more expensive than usual. We suggest that you avoid Tibet at this time. The same is true for the Nadam Fair held in Inner Mongolia, which usually takes place in the second half of August, and the Lusheng Festival held in Guizhou, which falls around September 27 to 29 (not definitely). If you really want to experience these festivals and accept the high travel expense, we suggest that you make your bookings much further in advance than usual given that there might be an insufficient supply of tour guides, hotels and cars.
