Introduction to Fujian
When it comes to Fujian, Wuyi Mountain (where the scenery tops Southeast China), the coastal garden city Xiamen, the Maritime Silk Road-Quanzhou and the costal city-Fuzhou are the top things that come to mind. As one of the hottest tourist destinations in southeast China, Fujian does not fail to attract its visitors. Fujian is both lavish with abundant natural landscapes and rich man-made landscapes. The earth buildings in Yongding are unique and legendary village constructions that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The talented and diligent Hui’an women are the highlight of the local lifestyle of those in southern Fujian. The ancient Kaiyuan Temple shows the magnificent and spectacular look of its dazzling decorations. Fujian is also the place where historical figures such as Ligang, Caixiang, Zhengcheng Gong and Linze Xu once lived. Their names will continue to be remembered throughout history.
Spring and autumn are the two best seasons for traveling to Fujian; winter and summer follow right after them. Generally, you can travel to Fujian at any time of the year.
Customs, Rituals and Taboos in Fujian
In Fujian you are not allowed to mention anything about monkeys in front of infants because a legend states that this kind of act would make the infants afflicted with a disease associated with monkey. If you do need to talk something related to them you can say, “climbing the trees” or “mountain people” instead. When holding a baby, you’re not supposed to say any word implying heaviness. P If you have a guest in your house, sweeping is a no-no because it means you’re driving your guests away and it would disgrace them. Treating your guests to six dishes is regarded as a profane act (in the Qing Dynasty, before execution, the prisoners were treated to six dishes, which showed the infinite royal graciousness). When attending your friends and relatives’ banquets, don not break any plate or bowl, especially during weddings. If a matchmaker is at your house arranging dates for you, you cannot show your hospitality with a cup of tea because it is defined as an obstacle to the process. Maternity rooms are off limits to visitors until the baby is one month old. When dining with others, do not plant your chopsticks into the steamed rice in your bowl because such acts are only performed in the occasion of offering sacrifices. Children are not allowed to wear two hats at the same time on account that it means the children might not grow tall in the future. Holding up an umbrellas inside the house, according to the local customs, is a sign that a leakage could occur in the ceiling.
Fujian Kung Fu Tea
Fujian people are big fans of tea and Fujian kung fu tea is famous around the world. Drinking kung fu tea entails a set of mini and exquisite tea ware, including a dark-red ceramic teapot, a refined porcelain teacup in the shape of a walnut and a pot for boiling up water. Oolong is a kind of half-zymolytic tea that can stand long infusions in water giving out a special fragrance. Anxi Tieguanyin is the most famous oolong tea. It’s said that this kind of tea leaf is red in the rim and green in the middle and its fragrance will not easily fade away after many times of infusion.
When making kung fu tea, you should pay special attention to the distance of pouring water into the teapot. Pouring water to the teapot at a certain height will stir the impurities up to the surface and you can sweep them with a lid; pouring water close to the teapot help keep the fragrance of the tea. The whole procedure is as follows: (1) first, fill the teapot that contains tea leaves 70-80% of its capacity with boiled water (for washing up the leaves); (2) then pour boiling water into the teapot again and cover it with the lid; and (3) pour boiling water to the surface of the teapot to disperse the fragrance of the leaves with the heat of the water.
Once you arrive in Fujian, you should take a sip of the kung fu tea in your leisure time while traveling.
