Luoyang, known as the ancient capital of 13 dynasties, has a time-honored history of over 1500 years. It is hailed as one of the four greatest ancient cities in China for it is the earliest capital city involving the largest number of dynasties. It is thought to be the cradle of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. Heluo Culture, with Lo Shu Square at its core, is considered the cultural root for Chinese people. Its peony, which is regarded as the national flower, contributes to its fame as the city of peonies.

Highlights of Luoyang: Shaolin Temple & Longmen Grottoes

Day 1: When you step out of a railway station or airport you will see your personal tour guide holding a name sign. You’ll follow the guide to meet the driver go to the hotel. You will make full use of the day by visiting visit Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple. Longmen Grottoes is famous for being one of the four greatest grottoes in China. The niches and shrines chiseled there represent the complete and spectacular Buddhist artworks from the late North Wei Dynasty to Tang Dynasty. The White Horse Temple is the first Buddhist temple in China. You will see relics remained from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

Day 2: Wake up early for the Kungfu day tour. It takes about an hour to get to Dengfeng where Shaolin Temple is located. Shaolin Temple was built in 495 AD and is known for Shaolin Kungfu taught in the Temple. There are monks living in the Temple that practice martial arts every day. You will not only see a Kungfu show but also the environment and the way they live. After a vegetarian lunch in a local restaurant you will also visit the Pagoda Forest along with other destinations. They include the tombs for famous monks, and Songshan Academy, which is known as the cradle of Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty. At the end of the day you will take a private vehicle back to Luoyang.

Day 3: In the morning you will visit Eastern Zhouwangcheng Tianzijialiu Museum, which is built over the original site that displays the horses and chariots for emperor and officials in the Eastern Zhou period. After, you will take a stroll around Laochengqu, which literally means “old district of the city.” It is the first district in Luoyang, many temples, memorial halls and drum towers can be seen. After lunch you will be escorted to the railway station or airport for the next destination.
