The Old City of Kashgar

The Old City of Kashgar

Located at the city center of Kashgar, the “Old City” is similar to a scroll that depicts the vivid customs and lifestyles of the Uygur people. With an area of 4.3 square kilometers, the Old City has a large group of Uygur residents. It is home to more than 120,000 Muslims. It also has a history of more than 2,000 years and was once a summer palace in ancient times.

Mud, bricks, and wood based residential houses are densely lined along the alleys that appear to form a maze. Many small lanes crisscross throughout the town and reach every corner. The centuries-old simple two-storied houses are so old that you may be afraid they might collapse at any time. It is commonly warned that tourists not climb the stairs leading to the top of a house alone.

Almost each house has a courtyard, big and small. Trees and flowers such as mulberries, figs, megranates, almonds, grapes, roses, and so on are grown in the yards, making them relaxing and refreshing.

No other place like Old City can be found in the world. Not only has the architecture remained the same as hundreds of years ago, but also the life of locals. Even the smell spreads in the town is old. You will also appreciate this rare scene and experience.
