Culture in Kashgar

Uyghur Custom

Uyghur people are the main residents in ancient Kashgar where the local color is strong and symbolic in XinJiang region. Uyghur people believe Islamic religion; therefore, their clothes, food, housing, etiquette, wedding and funeral are affected accordingly.


Uyghur clothes is beautiful and diversity with unique style. Man usually wears shirt with a qiapan (a long gown) which the collar cross from the right overlapping, without button, and to the knees. Woman likes colorful blouse with collar but no sleeves. Everyone likes fine embroidered, quadrilateral color cap and long boot. Young unmarried women wear their hair in eight and ten or even more braids, the longer the more beautiful. Religious people use long and white cloth to wrap their heads.


Steamed flour food is the main food, including nang grilled, noodles, Xinjiang rice, steamed stuffed buns, noodles in soup, Ququ noodle and so on. They like beef and mutton. Fruit is indispensable in people’s daily life. They also like green tea, black tea and drinking.


Their resident houses usually are made of earth and wood; the roof where has a window is flat and square. The roof also can be used as balcony or for people to enjoy the cool wind. Uyghur like live closely together in the countries where a crisscross net of canals, trees are flourish. Each house is a yard itself, where is planting many flowers and trees of peach, almond, pear, grape and fig. In the house, usually there is an adobe kang; a tapestry on the wall with many big and small niches decorated with flower patterns.


Uyghur people are friendly and enthusiasm. It is an ethnic minority advocating courtesy. When strange guests are arriving, they will still treat them friendly and warmly. When meeting relatives and friends, they will shake hands.

Country of Dances and Songs

Kashgar was called “Country of Dances and Songs”. A thousand years ago Kashgar dances and songs were delivered into central plains and it was famous in Chang during the period of Sui-Tang Dynasty. Now, Kashgar ethical dances and songs are more famous and unique which has become an indispensable part of Chinese music and dance art.

Uyghur people are born to sing and dance. Everyone, no matter old or young, man or woman, will dance and sing with the happy mood and stirring affection. Some of Uyghur dances are plain and short, full of local color; some are grand in scale with modern style; some are undisciplined and unconstrained, outstanding in jump; some are strong, graceful with long and deep meaning.

The world famous Uyghur classical music Twelve Muqam is rare treasure of Uyghur music and dance art. Uyghur dances include populous and changing Kashgar Synime, and Dao lang Dance, Sa ma Dance, Maxirap Dance, and so on.
