Yangtze River and Its Culture Introduction
The Three Gorges of Yangtze River which is China's biggest river - is the most mysterious and magnificent section of the gorges of Yangtze River. It consists of Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge. It starts from Baidicheng which is at the foot Weiba Mountain of Fengjie County, Chongqing City on the west to Nanjinguan of Yichang City, Hubei Province on the east. It is 193 kilometers long and canyon section takes up 90 kilometers.
The landform of the Three Gorges is unusual, and the sight gorgeous, which makes it famous from the old times till today and one of China's top ten scenic spots and also the world-famous scenic spot. For thousands of years, the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River has demonstrated eternally gracefulness to people from all over the world. Today, the world's biggest hydroelectric power station of the Three Gorges is being constructed. After the main current of the Yangtze River was cut off, the water level has been raised up to 110 meters at most, amounting to 175 meters above sea level. Some of the human landscapes and natural landscapes will be submerged. But, at the same time, one batch of new landscapes will appear.
Qutangxia is also called Kui Gorge, which starts from Baidicheng of Fengjie County on the west to Daxi Town of Wushan County on the east. It is 8 kilometers long and famous for its grandness.
Wu Gorge starts from the mouth of Daning River which is on the east of Wushan County, Hubei Province to the ferry of Badong County. It is 46 kilometers long and world-famous for its mystery and beauty. The Wu Gorge is divided into two sections-the west section and the east section. The west section comprises of Jinkuiyinjia Gorge (Golden Helmet and Silver Armor Gorge) and Jianchuan Gorge (Arrow-Crossing Gorge), while the east section consists of Tieguan Gorge (Mental Coffin Gorge) and Menshan Gorge (Door Leaf Gorge). Among the gorges, there are plenty of fogs, making the ancient people left behind the masterpiece throughout the ages: "No water is wide enough when you have crossed the sea; no cloud is beautiful but that which crowns the peak".
Xiling Gorge starts from the mouth of Xiangxi of Zigui County, Yichang City on the west to Nanjinguan, Yichang County on the east. It is 66 kilometers long. It is divided into two sections by Miaonankuan Valley-the west section and the east section. From the west to the east, there are the Bingshubaojian Gorge (the Book on Military Strategy and Precious Sword Gorge), Niuganmafei Gorge (the Cow's Liver and Horse's Lung Gorge), Kongling Gorge, Dengying Gorge (the Lamplight Gorge), Huangmao Gorge (Brown Cat Gorge), and so on. There are many rapids and torrents among these Gorges.
The project of the Three Gorges of Yangtze River locates at Xiling Gorge. Its official construction began on December 14, 1994. The project uses the policy of "the first-level development, one time to complete, storing water by stages, and continuous immigration". The dam is the concrete gravity dam. The total length of the top of dam amounts to 3,035 meters and the height of the dam is 185 meters. The normal storage level is 175 meters and the total storage is 3.93 billion cubic meters, of which the floods-control storage is 2.215 billion cubic meters. The rate of sediment flow is 2,460 cubic meters each second. And the holes for discharging sand are arranged and the bottom of the sections of concrete gravity dam and the electric power station.
The flood discharge ability of the section of flood discharge of the dam is 110,000 cubic meters each second. The workshop of the hydroelectric power station locates both at the left hand and the right hand of the flood discharge section, with 26 installed machines with a unit capacity of 700,000 kilowatts, a gross capacity of 18.20 million kilowatts, and a yearly average generating capacity of 84.7 billion kilowatt-hours. The yearly one-way throughput capacity of the navigation structure of the left bank amounts to 50 million tons. The double-way five-level navigation lock can allow the pass of a 10000-ton class vessel. The one-way first-level vertical ship lift can allow the quick pass of a 3000-ton fast the passenger-cargo ship. After of the completion of the project, the advantages of preventing floods, generating electricity, shipping, cultivation, traveling, ecologic protection, environmental purification, developmental immigration, the project to divert water from the south to the north, water supply and irrigation, and so on will be brought into full play. This is the largest power station that no others can compare with in the world!
The scenic spots and historic resorts of the Three Gorges are extensive and profound, recording a great number of moving historical facts. Therein, Baidicheng, Qu Yuan's former residence, San You Cavern and so on seem to take visitors into a splendid historical maze. The legends of the Three Gorges are plentiful and exquisite, from the legend of Shennv Peak (Goddess Peak) to Qu Yuan and Lady Zhaojun, they all resemble a magnificent scroll of folk literature in front of the people. The mountains and rivers of the Three Gorges boast various forms, which seem to guide the people to tour in a colorful decorated corridor. Through the ages, the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River has aroused the empathy of innumerable tourists who have been evoked to express their incomparable love to their charming and beautiful motherland.
Yichang, located at the mouth of Xiling Gorge, is the only key city between Wuhan and Chongqing, which obtains the obvious geographical superiority in the global economic development. The Project of the Three Gorges greatly triggers many effects as making Yichang become a strong point of the coastal economy of the Yangtze River and a hotspot area of China's opening up.
