The Dragon Boat Festival

There is a long history of Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival in May. It has great content and people participate  reflecting on the folk tradition of Suzhou in Jiangnan.

Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival dates back to the commemoration of famous general Wu Zixu of the Spring and Autumn Period. With the development of the social economy, the Dragon Boat Festival for commemorating Wu Zixu has an annual carnival of Suzhou, coming into being a series of activities related to local natural conditions, production and livelihood, economic characteristics and state of cultural development. These activities fall into four categories. One is the large-scale activity of dragon boat performance, while the other represents Suzhou people’s intelligence of adapting to nature and improving life such as collecting herbs, hanging Chinese mugwort leaves and calamus; the third represents long-term culture of silk weaving and peculiar dress culture including cable-like decorations; the final one has many activities, among which wrapping Zongzi and having meal are two core contents.

During the period of Cultural Revolution, many large-scale activities like the Suzhou dragon boat competition were suspended. In recent years, it has been celebrated again. Some other customs are still continuing in some degree among Suzhou people. However, less young people know about it.
