The Officials' Office of Pingyao County

Officials' Office of Pingyao

Pingyao County was originally built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and located in the central area of the ancient town. The officials’ office of Pingyao County began in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its earliest buildings that survived the test of time can be traced back to six hundred years ago (the sixth year during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Yuan Dynasty, 1346). The office sits in the north facing the south in symmetrical construction. Extending over 200 meters from the south to the north and 100 meters from the west to the east, it has an area of over 26,000 square meters.

The architecture style of the office correlates with old customs of civil administrative bodies in the left side and military bodies to the right side, the law court in the front and bedrooms in the back. From the inside to outside stand the gate, main hall, door, minor hall, living room and the Daxian Mansion; from its north to its south on the right side stand the guest room, Changping Hall (also called Qianliang Hall for storing money and rice), Zanhou Temple and the Village God Temple; from its south to its north on the left side stand the jail, office (the heritage site), Shiwang Temple, Hongshan Post House and Dubu Hall (the Shiwang Temple, Hongshan Post House and Mawang Temple are not open to the public as they are presently under construction). The architectural complex as a whole is a well-organized unity in the midst of disorder and master configuration. Be its layout or functional design, it is similar to a miniature royal palace.

Tips: There are performances opening the court at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday and at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the weekend. You can also be a part of it if you want.
