Western Hills

In the western suburbs of Kunming there lies Western Hills, which is 15 kilometers to the downtown area. The Western Hills were also called Biji Mountain in the past, which is a generic term for four hills. Facing the Dianchi Lake in the distance, Western Hills stretch far from Biji Pass to Haikou. They are known as the “Sleeping Buddha Hills” because of their appearance of giant sleeping Buddha when looking from a distance. They have also been given another name, “Sleeping Beauty Hills,” because they can also appear like a beautiful girl. Among the hills, the Arhat Peak, boasts an altitude of 2,511 meters, and is the highest.

Western Hills have now been developed into a forest park with various scenic areas. Tradition has it that people must pay a visit to hills on March 3rd in the Chinese lunar calendar for good fortune in the coming year. On this day, the hills are filled with temple fairs, local folk songs and lion dances, which give you a sense of auspiciousness.
