An introduction of Honghe County

 

Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture is located in the south Yunnan Province which is connected with Kunming province in the north and adjacent with Vietnam in the south. The total area is 32,931 sq. km. and its prefecture capital is in Mengzi city. At the end of 2008, the permanent resident population is 4,412,000 and the total population in the household register is 4,242,000. It administers three cities namely, Gejiu , Kaiyuan and Mengzi and ten counties namely, Jianshui, Shiping, Mi'le, Honghe, Luxi, Yuanyang, Lvchun, Jinping Miao, Yao and Dai Autonomous County, Pingbian Miao Autonomous city and Hekou Yao Autonomous City. The Honghe Hani Autonomous Region was built in 1954 and merged with Mengzi special administrative region in 1957 and then was called Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. The major terrain is plateau. Ailao Mountain and Red River is in the southwest and Nanpan River passes through in the northeast.

 

It produces medicinal materials such as cassia and cartialgenous and is rich in tin ore. The agricultural products are rice, corn, potato, sugarcane, peanut, tobacco, cotton and fruits such as banana, pineapple, litchi and coffee. In terms of industry, there are metallurgy, machinery, chemistry, building materials, electric power and sugar manufacturing. The special local products are tinwork in Gejiu City and pomegranate in Mengzi City. As for the places of interest, there are Bailong Cave in Mi'le County, A'lu Ancient Cave in Luxi County, etc.

 

Honghe Autonomous Prefecture is one of the most important industrial bases which has world-known tin ore city— Gejiu City. It is a mountainous place here with multiple ethnic groups which have many impoverished population and long border. Moreover, Hekou, Jinping and Lvchun borders on Vietnam so that there are two State Class 1 ports, namely Hekou and Jinshui River. Its major advantages are diverse in living beings, multiple in culture and abundant in resources. The natural resources are abundant such as biological resource, mineral resources and sightseeing resources. What's more, the Topic of Cancer also crosscuts it.

 

Furthermore, there is 7,500 sq. km tropical area in the region. It has a huge potential value in the recoverable deposits of mineral resources and is rich in sightseeing resources such as historical culture, natural culture and ethnic customs. The current situation and structure of the development in Honghe Autonomous Region takes Red River as the boundary. There is a huge difference from the south and the north in development and mountainous area and dam area in productivity. However, it is imbalanced in social development and belongs to underdeveloped area.
