Dragon Boat Festival

Held on the Qingshui River between the 24th and 27th of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival in Guizhou Province is worth seeing. The Miao people come from Taijiang, Zhenyuan and Shibing come to take part in this festival.

Dragon is the symbol of luck and power fir the Miao people. On the Dragon Boat Festival, people carve the head of a dragon delicately and beautifully, with a few wishing words such as “bring people favorable weather” and “the country flourishes and the people live a good life”. Later, 8 strong men carry the dragon head from Miao village and take a colorful boat to the launching destination of Cui Lake. “Inviting Dragon,” “worshipping the dragon,” “celebrating,” and “launching” are ceremonies of worshipping of dragon, which symbolize a bumper brain harvest, peace in the village, and thriving domestic animals.

The rowing of dragon boats by the Miao people is different from that of the Han. Miao people stand to paddle, while Han people sit. The competitive rowing of the dragon boats is intense. It is a sport’s competition and presents strength, skills, wisdom, bravery, and unity among the Miao.
