Ballad of Liu Sanjie

Ballad of Liu Sanjie

“Guangxi is like a song paradise. It is all taught by Liu Sanjie”. According to Zhuang tradition the “Gexu”, or song fair, came about because of Liu Sanjie, the ‘Song Fairy’. She is the symbol of Gexu, the epitome of beauty, wisdom, love and intelligence. She sang the first songs of Gexu and Liu Sanjie’s home town,Yizhou City, represents the region.

The Ballad of Liu Sanjie incorporates folk songs of life, love, production, riddles, stories, ceremonial rites and creation stories. These lyrical songs reflect a rich ethnic tradition and inheritance, and the folk singing of this area is a particularly colorful and delightful art form, which has exerted a profound influence in China and further afield. Liu Sanjie herself is said to have been a precocious and wonderful singer and writer of songs who, with her lover, was eventually transformed into a lark.

The songs, and the Gexu Song Fair was also famed for a place to ‘choose a mate by singing’.  The traditions have high research value and great charm, but people tend to choose mates differently these days, and with the impact of modern culture and entertainment the traditions of Liu Sanjie are at risk of fading into history.
