China Culture Tours

Grace,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Work has been hectic since returning from Beijing.

Yes we had a great time. K, our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and accommodating, and always had a big smile on her face. Please thank her again for making our time in Beijing so memorable.

The highlight was the Great Wall which we were lucky enough to see in bright sunshine, and the boys really enjoyed the chairlift up and toboggan down. Very novel. It was really good that K didn't pressure us to meet a timetable, we wandered on the wall for ages (we heard other guides hurrying their customers along).

The Forbidden City was very busy, but to be expected. It was better when we got away from the crowds into the smaller quieter courtyards. We were able to get a feel of what it must have been like in the days of the emperors. Maybe think about a route that goes off the beaten track a bit more?

The summer palace was fantastic. It was a shame the boat wasn't sailing on the day we went but K arranged for us to go up the temple on the hillside that had great views of the lake and the city beyond. That was a real plus. And K even managed to arrange a short ferry ride to the north gate that was very good - and welcomed after a day of walking.

Both restaurants were excellent. We especially liked the one near the great wall. The Vegetarian one in Beijing was also very good although we did pick a couple of dishes that were not to our taste. Too much fennel I think?

The driver was good; punctual and polite (sorry can't remember his name) and we felt pretty safe with him in the very busy Beijing traffic. Drivers in Beijing obviously need nerves of steel.

The only slight disappointment was the Hutong tour. The Hutong we went was jammed with parked cars and the rickshaws had to weave in and out of them. It was difficult to get the feel for the place. We also didn't stop to see one of the families and courtyards. It felt a bit rushed. But that was only a minor blemish, the rest of our visit and K's company more than made up for it. We would certainly recommend your company to any friends visiting China.

We enjoyed our train journey from Hong Kong to Beijing, a time to relax and watch the world go by. China is a big country!

The train was very clean and comfortable and the food was not bad too (for westerners). The only thing that may discourage other westerners is that there were a number of smokers in the corridor. European trains don't allow smoking anymore so that may be unwelcome to some people.

Best wishes
