We explore the lively and bustling bazaars, old remains and desert in Kashgar, Turpan and Urumqi, spend quality time with local Uighur residents, submerse ourselves in the both awe-inspiring and relentless isolation of the Taklamakan desert, dine in a beautiful vineyard and encounter the sheer magnificence of the flaming mountains. All the while, we take in the glorious scents and flavors of the vibrant Central Asian culture that lies at the heart of Xinjiang.
17 Days China Silk Road Tour Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival / Beijing
Arrive at Beijing, your personal guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel. The remainder of the day will be yours to relax and rest from jet lag.
Day 2 Beijing
Today you will visit the Tiananmen Square, which is the world's largest city square and enduring symbol of China's national pride. The magnificent Forbidden City,it’s the largest and most intact structures of the imperial palace. In the afternoon, visit Beijing's splendid Temple of Heaven. Enjoy the Peking Opera Show in the evening.
Day 3 Beijing
Today you visit to the Great Wall at Mutianyu section. It is one of the most amazing feats of human labor - the only man-made construction on earth visible from outer space. After lunch, you will visit the Summer Palace, the resort of Empress Dowager Ci Xi. Enjoy a famous Peking Duck Banquet for dinner
Day 4 Beijing to Xian
Free at leisure until be met and transferred to airport for your flight to Xian. Upon arriving in Xian, your personal guide will greet you and transfer you to your hotel for check in. After a rest, have a visit to Shaanxi Historical Museum, it’s one of the main museums in China which holds numerous unearthed cultural relics of China. Enjoy Tang Dynasty Show in the evening.
Day 5: Xian
Visit to the incredible life-size Terra-Cotta Warriors. Afterwards you can see the Wild Goose Pagoda and visit the famous City Wall, it’s China's best-preserved City Wall built in the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Day 6 Xian to Dunhuang
Visit the Hanyang Tomb, the Jing Emperor's tomb in Han Dynasty which was opened in 2001 and is famous for its rich collections of different kinds of tombs. After the tour, you will be transferred to airport for the flight to Dunhuang. Arrive at Dunhuang, your personal guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel.
Day 7 Dunhuang
After breakfast, you will have tours to the Mogao Caves; the caves hold the world's richest treasure house of Buddhist sutras, murals and sculptures. And, you will experience a short camel-riding along the Echoing-Sand Dune to the Crescent Lake,, who is a nature miracle coexist with the desert for thousand of years. The lake and the Echoing-Sand Dune which can make sounds when the wind passes are located in the place where the sand and the oasis meet.
Day 8 Dunhuang
Today’ s activities include visit the Yumen Guan Pass, once as one of the west gates out of the country of the Han Dynasty (206 B. C. -220 A. D.), it is quite ruined by the shifting sands but still shows the ever splendor. The Great Wall of the Han Dynasty, made in clay and bulrushes about 2000 years ago, the wall still remains very well. The Yang Guan Pass, Together with the Yunmen Guan Gate, it is also one of the west gates out of the country of the Han Dynasty. And The Hecang Fortress, supplies like food and wine were transported here from nearby towns to be stored for the armies that guarded the Yumen Guan Pass. Take evening flight to Urumqi. The guide will wait for you at Urumqi airport and then escort you to your hotel for check in.
Day 9 Urumqi
After breakfast, you will head to visit the Heavenly Mountain (Tianchi); it is surrounded by green pastures and pristine conifer forests. Snowy Alp-like peaks soar to great heights and enclose the lake. Take a boat ride on Heavenly Lake and escape into a peaceful, dream-like world. This afternoon is spent at Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar as well as the Xnjiang Museum
Day 10 Urumqi
Today you will explore the Nanshan Pasture. You can ride a horse or a camel running through the valleys, walk across the woods picking mushrooms and enjoying the magical wild flowers, you also can climb up the mountain to overlook. Then continue to visit the Terai Camp to experience the Kazak nomadic life and taste delicious Xinjiang Cruise – milk tea and mutton.
Day 11 Urumqi to Turpan
Drive to Turpan this morning. First you will have a visit to the Gaochang Ancient City. Gaochang was founded by Chinese in the 2nd century B.C. as a garrison on the Silk Road. Things to see include the Bell Tower and a few Buddhist temples. The Astana Tomb, which is located in the Gobi Desert and 6km from the Gaochang Ancient City. Covering an area of 10 square kilometers, the tombs were the public cemetery of the ancient Gaochang residents, both aristocrats and commoners. Passing by Flaming Mountain to Visit the Bezkelik Thousand Buddha Caves, once an important Buddhist site with many caves covered with brightly painted murals, Bezeklik means "place of paintings" in Uighur. The caves were hewn into the Cliffside, and large murals, Monks used to live inside the caves and the frescoes here clearly represent the life work of generations of devotees.
Day 12 Turpan to Overnight train (you could personalize it if you do not like train: drive from Turpan to Urumqi and take flight from Urumqi to Kashgar.)
Drive to visit Ancient City of Jiaohe, another ruined city that is 6 miles to the west of Turpan. It is probably the same size as Gaochang but better preserved. UNESCO has contributed to its preservation. Move on to visit Ancient Karez system.The entire Turpan region has for 2000 years relied upon the Karez underground irrigation system for sustenance; there is currently one karez well site open for exhibition. It is complete with a museum of displays and pictures. It is a good way to get an understanding of how the tunnels were dug. Then we will proceed to visit Grape Valley. Lying at the base of the western end of Flaming Mountains, Grape Valley is a unique world of vineyards and fruit trees. Visit Emin Minaret, also called Sugong Pagoda is located 2km east of Turpan city. The whole place is composed of the pagoda and a mosque. The minaret was built in a simple Islamic style, 44 meters in height, and 10 meters in diameter at the base. In the afternoon you will be transferred to railway station to take overnight train to Kashgar.
Day 13 Overnight train to Kashgar
Arrive at Turpan, your guide will geet you and then drive to Lake Karakuki, The lake is located approximately 200km from Kashgar, ,At an altitude of 3600m, it is the highest lake of the Pamir plateau, near the junction of the Pamir Mountains, Tian Shan and Kunlun Shan mountain ranges. Surrounded by mountains which remain snow-covered throughout the year, The Lake is popular among travellers for its unreal scenery and the clarity of its reflection in the water, whose color ranges from a dark green to azure and light blue. Stay tonight at yurt.
Day 14 Kashgar
This morning you will enjoy the scenic of Lake Karakuli, and then drive back to Turpan. Passing by the Mahmud Kashari Tomb, located in the Wupar Village, Shufu County is set off with trees and bushes. Mahmud Kashgari was born into an aristocratic family of the Karakhanid Dynasty in the eleventh century. An outstanding Uygur scholar and linguist, Mahmud compiled. After arrive at Turpan, you will visit Sunday Livestock Bazaar,The Abakh Khoja Tomb, which is also known as the Tomb of Xiang Fei (Fragrant Lady) in China. Situating 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) northeast of Kashgar City, Abakh Khoja Tomb is an ancient Islamic building, where five generations of a famous Islamic master were buried. It is also commonly known as the tomb of Xiangfei, the only Uygur concubine of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)., Sunday Bazaar, There is a bazaar everyday in Kashgar, but the one on Sunday is the liveliest, as the whole community gets together. The Bazzar in Kashgar is a social and commercial highlight of the week in Western Xinjiang. In the bazaar you can find different kinds of goods: ironware, silverware, fruit, clothes, local food, livestock, etc. Traders are buying and selling one week's stock of cows, sheep, goats and horses. The process of bargaining is fantastic. The old Town of Kashgar, contains a large group of Uygur residential houses. The Old Town city is now home to 630 homes with more than 2450 people, all of whom are Muslims.
Day 15 Kashgar to Urumqi
After breakfast, visit the ID Kah Mosque. It is the largest mosque in China. Every Friday, it houses nearly 10,000 worshippers and may accommodate up to 20,000. Then you will be transferred to the airport to take flight to Urumqi. Stay tonight at Urumqi.
Day 16 Urumqi to Beijing
Today you will take flight back to Beijing. Free at leisure the rest of day in Beijing.
Day 17 Depart from Beijing
Your guide will pick up you from your hotel and transfer you to airport for your flight leave Beijing.
