The Siguniang Mountain

The Siguniang Mountain

The Siguniang Mountain, which is translated as 4 girls in Chinese, lies between Xiaojin County and Wenchuan County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. It is located in Sichuan Province and consists of four continuous peaks in a range from north to south, with an altitude of over five thousand meters above sea level. The four peaks covered with snow year round resemble the shape of four girls wearing white veils. Among them, the Yaomei Peak is the highest and is revered as the most beautiful mountain. The surface of this mountain has a long history and is made up of sandstones, slates, marbles, limestone and crystalline stones. It dates back to the Mesozoic Era and Paleozoic Era. The natural erosion and corrosion has shaped the rocks and peaks, contributing to their extreme steepness. Minjiang River surges forward to the east and Dadu River acting as a natural barrier to the west, adding more charm to the natural landscape. In the valley, the scenery is scattered with green grass and wild flowers, running brooks and rushing cascades. Half way up the mountain hovers glaciers; and on the top are awe-inspiring steep rocks and boundless snow.

The mountainous area has luxuriant forests and capricious weather, which is ideal for various species of animals and plants to inhabit. Above the altitude of 2,500 meters are virgin forests, mainly coniferous forests and broadleaf mixed forests, which have precious trees including Chinese larches, Chinese yews and Lianxiang trees. Above the altitude of 3,700 meters are distributed alpine meadows. Thanks to ideal conditions, it is rich in rare herbal medicines. There are also about 50-60 kinds of animals and about 300 kinds of birds, amongst which are rare animals that have national protection. These animals include giant pandas, lesser pandas, golden monkeys, snow leopards, among others. The world famous Wolong Giant Pandas Nature Reserve Base is located on the east slope of Siguniang Mountain.
